Design Principles
Unlike most restoration projects, the SHMB is specifically designed to
restore and replicate the natural processing occurring nearby in similar reference areas. The following
design principles were the cornerstones for the development of the final design:
- Sustainability ñ the system Skykomish Habitat LLC builds should be built to last and sustain itself
without artificial maintenance. When restoring or creating habitat, the habitat features must fit
within the context of the habitat-forming process.
- Process Design - The design emphasizes reestablishing geomorphic processes over constructing a fixed
habitat form. Therefore, the initial construction of the mitigation bank
represents a starting point or template that will provide the initial structure to be modified by ongoing
natural processes.
